Conference Overview

Welcome! The 24th annual BBSF Conference will take place on February 10, 2012 at the Darden Graduate School of Business. The theme for this year’s conference is “Manage the Future.” This year, not only will we explore relevant industry and functional topics which will help attendees understand the key trends and skills critical for future success, but we will also explore and celebrate the ability to take risks and flourish in the face of uncertainty. To that end, the conference is comprised of two key components: Hot Topics and Leap of Faith.

Hot Topics in Marketing, Consulting, Entrepreneurship and Finance – The first half of the conference will provide attendees the opportunity to choose from various industry- specific panels to engage with experts covering relevant and engaging topics.

Marketing/ Technology: Social Media: Legitimate Marketing Tool or Hype?
Consulting: Relationship Selling: Do It Early and Often
Entrepreneurship: Corporate Gigs for Entrepreneurs: Assets or Distractions?
Finance: Where do we go from here? An inside look at how recent uncertainty is reshaping how firms contend for new business.

Keynote Speaker – Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade, the Honorable James (Jim) Cheng, Darden Class of 1987 – Secretary Chen will share his perspective on “managing the future”. Specifically, Mr. Cheng will discuss how to maintain an optimistic and realistic outlook while still upholding the responsibility to be honest with key stakeholders.

“Leap of Faith” Workshop & Celebration Reception – The MBA curriculum teaches students to analyze data, and choose an opportunity that promises the most optimal return. However, there are moments in our lives when we’re presented with great opportunities, the value of which cannot be validated by the analytical approaches we learn in class. Leap of Faith is a broader BBSF imitative which captures the stories of Darden alums who have made a choice based more on belief than facts. During the second half of the conference this year, we will engage with courageous alums who have taken a “leap of faith” and facilitate a workshop (hosted by Professor Ryan Quinn) to discuss specific strategies and tactics to leverage when considering taking a "leap of faith."
